August 2013 (4): Last one....this little girl was really special (not that they all aren't) but she was extra special. I met her at the vet's offices as we thought she had tvt cancer.... but it turned out she didn't huge relief for her owner and us ! :) It turned out she a really bad rash all over her privates (similar to eczema). Luckily we could sterilise and she went home with a cream... :)
August 2013 (3): This little girl is so petite and sweet...
August 2013 (2): And another one :) Beautiful little girl!
August 2013 (8): We have sterilised another 4 PHOENIX LADIES, these beautiful dogs never have to worry again about having unwanted litters!
July 2013 (7): Last one... this little Phoenix lady had loads of personality and wasn't shy at all, she just loved all the attention she got from the ladies at the vet. Her owner was an 83 year old gentleman who was so grateful to the Phoenix for assisting with sterilisation.
July 2013 (6): We managed to sterilise another three Phoenix ladies this week (one on Tuesday and two on Wednesday). Each sterilisation we do is a victory, just think of how many litters of unwanted puppies we are saving.....
July 2013 (5): This Phoenix lady is from Lombo Street in Joza, all our ladies are camera shy :)
July 2013 (4): This little lady was sterilised today. She was very timid and shy and wouldnt' look at me when I wanted to take her photo. She has a brother and sister at home who will also be sterilised via the Phoenix.
July 2013 (3): This little man fondly known as Chappie was neutered with the Phoenix today. When I arrived at the vet to take his photo he was only just waking up and was very confused. I am sure he was very relieved that his surgery was over!
13/July/2013 'Shake the tin' at Pick'n'Pay Grahamstown: A big thank you to the Grahamstown community for supporting the Phoenix! We raised R3690 and will be able to spay another 7 female dogs!!
July 2013 (2): This is the other Phoenix girl from C Street ! Thank you to the amazing people of Grahamstown for supporting this project :)
July 2013 (1): Another two Phoenix girls spayed! They are sisters and are from C Street....they were sooo happy to be home!
June 2013 (4): Another Phoenix girl spayed! She was so excited to be home and was moving around so much we couldn't take a photo. In the end we asked her owner to hold her
June 2013 (3): This little girl was wide awake after her operation and ready to go home
June 2013 (2): This little girl was still out like a light when I went to take pictures at the Vet :)
June 2013 (1): This little girl comes from Hlalani Township and was very happy when the surgery was over...
Rika Ferreira taking over THE PHOENIX dog project Grahamstown!
Hector and I are leaving South Africa - it's time for us to move on.
The great news for THE PHOENIX is: Rika Ferreira is taking over the project!
Rika has been organising the big Grahamstown Spay Days and is well-known by many in the community for her passion and for her fantastic work for animals.
We are more than pleased to leave THE PHOENIX in her hands and are confident that the project will keep running and grow. Lizo Teyise, the loyal 'other half' of THE PHOENIX will of course also continue his work for the project. We are working on more fundraising options with another raffle coming up, with Rhodes' ROAR on board and with the next SPCA Spay Day in mind (expected in September).
Hector and I are off to start an exciting time with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in Europe. We'll definitely stay in touch and try to do our bit for the project from over there.
Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us. Please look after our Grahamstown animals.
Much love.
Hannah & Hector

March 2013 (2): Our latest PHOENIX girl has gone through the sterilisation procedure in an exemplary manner - patient and cheerful all the way through
March 2013 (1): As soon as this pretty PHOENIX lady sets her feet on home ground after returning from the vet, she takes off...
Spay Day Grahamstown Feb 2013!
...Or rather 'Spay Weekend'! Vet, SPCA team and volunteers worked flat out all weekend until on Sunday 24/02 at 9:30 pm the last dog was finally stitched up and taken to the recovery room. 53 dogs sterilised - what a success! It made all efforts more than worth it!

The dogs were previously identified and collected from their township homes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. This in itself was a challenge already - try telling a streetwise township dog to be at a certain place at a certain time to be caught by strangers and taken away in a noisy car... Exactly, not top of the wish list.
Once fetched, each dog was tagged with a number matching carefully organised documentation to ensure they would find their way home again. The dogs were then kept in SPCA kennels until it was their turn to be sterilised.
State Veterinarian Dr Zondi from Aliwal North carried out the operations on Saturday and Sunday. He worked with great confidence, tirelessly sterilising dog after dog, and delighted everyone with his good humour, calm disposition and willingness to have people watch his work and to answer questions.
The Spay Day focused on the sterilisation of females but some male dogs were also present. While boys and girls are equally good at making a fuss before and after the actual operation, the neutering of a male dog is a much quicker surgical procedure than the spaying of a female.
After the op, the dogs were moved to a recovery room where they were watched by invaluable volunteers who spent hours and hours comforting the animals and supervising their waking up.
The dogs were kept at the SPCA until staff were satisfied with their condition, but for a minimum of one day, and were then returned to their homes. This was of course everyone's favourite moment: the boys and girls were overjoyed to find themselves free and in their familiar environment again.
The stress the animals go through during the Spay Day process is apparent but thankfully – as so typical for dogs – they will wag their tail and smile again once it’s all over. And: Spay Day literally makes a life-changing difference! 53 Grahamstown dogs less that will produce unwanted pups!

Our greatest respect to the vet, to the SPCA team and to the volunteers who all put in an exceptional amount of work, passion and energy. THE PHOENIX is grateful and proud to have been part of this Spay Day, it was a fantastic experience!

Jan 13: Another PHOENIX runner! This girl knows we’re up to something from the first moment she sees us and is not very smitten with the idea of taking a ride to the vet’s!
She swiftly disappears. We can eventually trap her in a corner and she let’s us carry her to the car. It’s only when we take her out at the vet that we notice a growth at her backside – a uterine tumour. Good that she is now spayed. We’ll keep an eye on her.
